Winnie,
Though I totally understand your idea of "limited use" for "special
situations," I have seen so many of these "limited" times be extended far
past what I MEANT, so that I feel it is important to not give "permission"
(they do it without my "permission" anyway) to delay/forestall or offer
something other than the breast.
The use of a finger, as you noted, can be really disruptive. One mom who
came to our La Leche League meeting in St. Louis was reporting recent pain
with breastfeeding - and the baby was now 2 months old! Luckily, this was
a "fathers welcome group" (we allowed dads to attend - this was not a
"couples group" where moms feel they HAVE to bring a partner). So when the
baby started fussing, in order to keep the baby quiet while mom got her
clothes ready to breastfeed, Dad put his pinkie in - very shallow, just to
the first knuckle. (AHA!) Once Dad stopped doing this, baby went back to
correct feeding.
