Is isn't the Nitrous that is at issue - it is the possibility of a general.
With general Anesthesia, breast milk is considered a clear liquid by most,
although some are still holding onto the NPO /p midnight schema even for
breast milk. Remember that breast milk is cleared from the gut in 2 hours,
altho pre-procedure, I might give it 4 to be safe. I have NEVER heard of NPO
/p 8pm, not even for early morning surgeries - sounds as though this dentist
may need a little education. Perhaps he has another anesthesiologist he can
consult with. For most pediatric dental procedures, the anesthesia would
more closely resemble conscious sedation and not actual general anesthesia
with a breathing tube and ventilator. Few dental offices have true
outpatient surgery capacities, and even oral surgeons will send the patient
to a hospital or free standing surgery center if more than concious sedation
will be required.
