Lois:
I have seen some babies wrapped with the blanket covering baby's head and
neatly folded near the neck for good fit. Is there any way to do this AND
leave baby's hands free enough to remain in touch with his face?

Personal observations about covering baby's head (n-2). When I would place
my daughter in a cradle to sleep, she would 'travel' until her head was
touching the head of the cradle before she relaxed & slept. Note this was
in the days prior to the Back to Sleep. She was on her tummy. She preferred
to have her head in the corner of the cradle. In contrast, my son, possibly
as a reaction to forceps delivery, couldn't stand anything touching his
head for well over a year. Lower part, okay, but sides or top: he would cry
& try to rip off the offending hat.
