We currently see every breastfeding mom at least once during her stay
postpartum. The visit currently includes teaching or a review of some
basic breastfeeding info plus whatever we need to do to help her and
baby with nursing if there are any problems. We are currently working
on a program to help the nurses to do the basic teaching with more
consistency and more tuned to mom's readiness based on time from
delivery. Even when that program is well in place and we concentrate
mostly on working with challenges, we will still continue to visit each
mom at least briefly to introduce our services.
We notice that when moms call back with questions or concerns they
frequently ask specifically to speak to the LC that saw them as an
inpatient. If she isn't the one on that day, the mom is very willing to
talk to whoever is in. To me this is a strong indication that she is
calling because there is already a connection. Would she feel as free
to call if all she received was a sheet of paper with a phone number? I
suspect that in some cases, she would not-especially with that darn
sample pack so readily available!
