Dear Lactnet: Recently we have been plagued at our
hospital with "inflated" birth weights usually related
to mothers having IV fluids prior to vaginal and/or
c/s deliveries. 24 hours after delivery we are having
newborns that now are exceeding their 10% weight loss.
Question: Are any institutions using adjusted weights
(retaking the weight in 6-12 hours) to readjust for
the IV therapy issue. For scheduled c/s our anesthesia
department "loves" to overhydrate our mothers. Any
thoughts or ideas would be helpful; any current
"normal newborn nursery" policies would also be
appreciated.
Yours in lactation,
Debbie
