The discussion about providing the mother's milk to a baby with a poor
prognosis made me think about a student who I worked with last year. He
had Hurler's Syndrome, which is a rare genetic syndrome with severe
mental retardation and a myriad of physical anomolies. I was looking it
up in a book on syndromes and learned that the expected life expectancy
with Hurler's is 10 years. Well, this boy was born to a poor family in
Mexico. The dr. told the mother to take him home and that he would die
fairly soon. The mother reported that she was determined to keep him
alive, and did so by squeezing breastmilk into his mouth with a cloth.
She did this around the clock for some time. Well, last year, he
graduated from the Life Skills program at the high school. He was 22
years old. His mother feels very good about what she did for him!
