Heidi quoted a photo lab developing clerk as stating that "she could call the
authorities for the contents of my picture, this time was only a warning".
Well maybe the authorities should be aware of the clerk's threats! (Thank God
my Pembroke Pines BJ's clerk never commented on my breastfeeding
pictures...not pictures of me breastfeeding my toddler alone nor those of me
tandem breastfeeding my newborn (now 1 month) and 2 3/4 year old!) Can
threats from clerks such as this one be reported? What is the correct legal
way to handle such bad days? Being scolded for photos is a different tangent
than just breastfeeding in public. How is that covered?
I carry "Breastfeeding: It's Your Right" wallet cards with me every where I
go for those just in case bad days...that haven't happened to anywhere me
yet. I make these "business cards" on my computer - on one side is a clipart
picture of a breastfeeding mother and the "BF: It's Your Right" title and on
the reverse side is the Florida Law copied (from LLLI website
-http://www.lalecheleague.org/LawBills.html)
and pasted.
Part of the Florida's law states:
"The rest of the sections of this bill amend various criminal laws to
specifically exempt breastfeeding from their provisions:
Amends sections 800.02 (unnatural and lascivious acts), 800.03 (exposure of
sexual organs) and 800.04 (Lewd, lascivious or indecent assault or act upon
or in the presence of child) to state that a mother's breast feeding of her
baby does not under any circumstances violate these sections.
Amends various definition sections of 847.001 by adding the following:
"(3) Harmful to minors: …A mother's breast feeding of her baby is not under
any circumstances 'harmful to minors',"
"(5) Nudity: …A mother's breast feeding of her baby does not under any
circumstance constitute 'nudity', irrespective of whether or not the nipple
is covered during or incidental to feeding."
"(7) Obscene: … A mother's breast feeding of her baby is not under any
circumstances 'obscene'."
"(11) Sexual conduct: … A mother's breast feeding of her baby does not under
any circumstances constitute 'sexual conduct'."
Not only do people not know benefits of breastfeeding but they also don't
know there is a law protecting it. Carrying these cards in my purse lets me
educate such ignorant people on the spot of my and my baby's/toddler's legal
rights. I also give my patients and staff members a copy of the law so they
know it is okay to do in public.
I wonder if Elizabeth Baldwin has any suggestions regarding following chain
of command to get things settled in BJ's corporation.
Kathleen Williams, RN (at JMH L/D), BSN, CLC, MOM (to four kids ages 6, 4, 2,
and new...last two still breastfeeding)
