We too, are a small community hospital (Baby Friendly) and survived a visit
last Fall from the assessors. They were specific about requesting that the
Lactation Consultant (me) be present and available for interviewing. They
wanted to see our Breastfeeding Policy (no problem). Because we are small
and I am not full-time, they questioned me about the provision of
breastfeeding support for the community and how we handle the concerns of
mothers after hours, weekends, etc. We provide our mothers with lists of
community support: WIC, LLL, (Leaders names, numbers, meeting times) private
practice LC, our own Mom's group, and our Warm line. They also asked
specifically about engorgement and whether or not I recommended cabbage
leaves. We did well.
