Mary Grace Lanese asks whether anyone has identified restless sleep or
sleeplessness in infants whose mothers are taking antidepressants. I
recently had a case where this seemed to occur. The mother had a
complicated situation with badly cracked nipples, mastitis, and the baby had
tracheomalacia. We got all the early problems worked out and the baby was
doing beautifully on exclusive bfg. However, mother got depressed after
baby was hospt. with viral respiratory infection at about 2 months pp. Her
MD put her on Zoloft for two months. Dad is a physician, and the parents
noted agitation, restlessness, and hyperactivity in the baby after several
days of mom being on the Zoloft. The baby (who had previously had fairly
well-regulated sleep behavior and a placid personality) stopped sleeping and
became jittery. Dad was concerned about serotonin overload, and they d/c
bfg for several days. While on formula, baby's behavior and sleep patterns
re-established, but when they returned to the breast, the problem again
became apparent. So reluctantly, they have weaned, at least temporarily,
while considering their options.
