I am working with a mom and 10 day old baby who has been re-hospitalized with bacterial meningitis. Mom is nursing beautifully, but is pumping bottles to leave with me at night so she can go home to her other two children. Baby spits up large amounts of the EBM - I would estimate 1/2 to 1 oz of every 2 oz bottle she drinks. Mom is also noticing that baby is not working as diligently at the breast as she was in the beginning. Would an appropriate suggestion to this mother be to use the red, hospital-supplied preemie nipples on the bottles we use at night? I assume these are slower-flow nipples. I have adjusted my bottle-feeding technique by tilting the nipple up toward the roof of the mouth, and burping the baby every 1/2 ounce or so. That has helped with the spitting up, but I'm looking for any other suggestions.
Thanks,
