I hope it's not inappropriate to be posting this question here, but I've
been doing research on the internet and haven't been able to find an
answer to my question.

A mother I know is on 100mg of Tenormin, or Atenolol, daily (50mg twice
daily) for the treatment of Long QT Syndrome. She delivered her daughter
three days ago. The baby was born premature, at 32 weeks, weighs 3 lb. 14
oz., and is in the NICU. The baby is also at risk of having Long QT. The
mother very much wants to breastfeed, but she is getting lots of
conflicting advice from her LC, OB, pediatrician, and cardiologist. Her
heart condition is pretty serious, and the cardiologist says they can't
use anything but the Tenormin, and 100mg is the very lowest dosage to help
her.

I've seen research that says the med is approved by the AAP for nursing
moms, and I've seen research that says it is contraindicated for
breastfeeding. I'd really like for this mom to have the chance she wants
to breastfeed, but I think she is overwhelmed right now and is ready to
just go along with the docs that are telling her it's not possible. Does
anybody know of any up-to-date information I can give her?

Thanks in advance,
Amanda Durdin, aspiring IBCLC ;-)
