I have been asked by a collegue if there is any research connecting neonatal
candidal infection and maternal breastmilk or cutaneous candida infection.
Are any neonatal units routinely culturing breastmilk for candida?
Apparently there is some speculation regarding a recent neonatal death from
Candidal sepsis.
My understanding in the healthy neonate is that yeast does not culture
easily from either the milk or from the nipple tissue even with obvious oral
thrush in the baby and symptoms in the mom.
If anyone has thoughts to share I would appreciate hearing about it. My
first thought was "I hope they didn't mention this speculation to the
mother". Then I wondered what possible future impact this line of inquiry
might lead to.
Thanks,
tracy
