A recent New England Journal article highlighted the risk associated with a
non-screening approach to the problem of GBS. This has resulted in a
revision of the CDC Guidelines for pregnancy care providers with regard to
screening and care of the non-screened mother. These can be reviewed at:
http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5111a1.htm
They have developed a brochure for lay persons which is found at
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/gbs/PDFs/EnglishBrochure.pdf
Unfortunately the care is often not breastfeeding friendly, but we must find
ways to work around that, because this is a very devastating disease in the
newborn.
