My daughter breastfed for two and a half years. She led the weaning. She
would often pull off the breast and pop her thumb in her mouth, and
continued to suck her thumb until she was 7.
I totally agree that some children need to suck into toddlerhood and
beyond, but making the breast available won't necessarily keep them from
sucking fingers and thumbs.
