A speaker at the ALCA conference, Samuel Weinstein, described a teen mother
program he established. The mothers are young, often low-income, but - from
their contact with one another and with the information the group provides
(including Gabrielle Palmer's "Politics of Breastfeeding") - are remarkably
secure in their parenting. They tend not to start solids before 6 months
and tend to breastfeed for years, in an environment that encourages early
solids and early weaning.
He said, "When a doctor says something stupid to them, they're not
devastated. They're enraged."
What a concise and lovely description of women who feel in control of their
own lives :-)
