Jennifer,
Congratulations on your very supportive practice! Wish we had some
like you around here. I think you have done a great job getting
supportive info into the hands of the moms. Unfortunately, we can't
be with them 24/7 and they have so many other influences that pull
them away from natural nursing. You didn't say what your initiation
rate was before you started giving the support you mentioned. It
may take some time before the prenatal influenced moms are nursing
longer and it may not be until a second baby with you.
One suggestion is, with the mother's permission, of course, to have
a bulliten board with pictures of moms/babies who have reached
certain nursing "milestones". If a large percentage have dropped
out in the first couple months, you might want to start with such a
public "pat on the back" for those at 3 months. Then add 6 months,
a year, or whatever puts that carrot a little beyond where mom is
now, but not so far out that she feels no incentive.
