My question would be why an adult woman would have to defend herself to her
father who is a pediatrician, for goodness' sake. She can do what she
wishes. It's HER baby. This is a case where the grandfather obviously has
some personal agenda about breastfeeding that is coloring his advice and
treatment of his daughter. I suspect it also occurs in his advice to patients.
I would refer the mother to Diane Wiessinger's piece on weaning.
Diane Wiessinger's "What If I Want to Wean My Baby?":
http://www.wiessinger.baka.com/bfing/breastvbottle/wean.html
This mother needs to be empowered to make her own choices for her baby,
apart from her father's controlling and negative advice about breastfeeding
her baby to toddlerhood.
The phrase that comes to mind is:
Butt Out.
