I keep this scenario in mind whenever there is no early stooling, after the
meconium has been passed. It was a real eye opener for me, as my son
suffered from this (I realize NOW!!) Tom said his daughter had it too and at
age 3 they realized it. He would get her to take the mineral oil by putting
a m&m at the bottom of the dose cup!!
What do you wise ones think????
Sorry this is so long,
I think we better be careful here. This is not a breastfeeding issue. There
is nothing about breastfeeding that causes this and nothing in the normal
breastfeeding pattern of the older breastfeeding baby stooling less
frequently than daily, that has any implications for encoporesis. I worry if
we start trying to fix things that aren't broken and that are really out of
our scope. A lack of eary stooling does need to be investigated. In my
experience it is usually due to inadequate intake or rarely to some pathology
such as Hirschbrungs.
