I am currently doing a LACTNET search on this topic, but I would also
like to send a current post. I am working with a mom who nursed both of her
first children into toddlerhood. Her third child has been diagnosed with
Hirschsprung's disease. Within the next two weeks her 12lb, 3 month old son
will be going into surgery. Basically, they will be removing the diseased
part of his colon and reattaching the healthy parts.
The surgeon wants this mom to begin pumping milk 2-3 days prior to
surgery, and continue pumping 2-3 days after surgery. Mom HATES pumping and
typically experiences reduced milk supply when required to pump only. She
has already gone through this twice with this baby. Supply is up, and she is
worried that it will not stay that way if she needs to follow the above
guidelines. We are looking into pump and breastshield issues to avoid milk
reduction. PLEASE do not turn this into a discussion about pumps and
breastshields-- I am mainly concerned about the length of time prior to
surgery and afterward that this baby will NOT be breastfed.
Prior to surgery baby will be fed pedialyte (remember baby is 12
lbs.), and they are planning a g-tube for afterward. Doctor wants a CLEAN
colon for the procedure. Mom sent an email to Dr. Jack, but I remember his
note to us all about being GONE throughout August. Anyone ever work with a
Hirschsprung's disease situation?
