Metformin belongs to the biguanide family and is used to reduce glucose
levels in non-insulin dependent diabetics. Oral bioavailability is only 50%.
In a preliminary study of 5 women who received 500 mg three times daily,
milk levels were extremely low.1 While the average milk/plasma ratio was
0.34, the average dose to the infant was 0.040 mg/kg/d or 0.26% of the
weight-adjusted maternal dose. In this study, no adverse effects were noted
in any infant.
