Hi all,
Received a call from a mom today. Baby is 1month old. For the past 10
days baby has been nursing for 2 hours at a time, still acts hungry and
will take 2 oz of formula after breastfeeding. Mom says she is nursing
about every 3 hours. Says that other than when she feels let-down (about
twice a day) she is not hearing very much swallowing at the breast.
This baby gained over 1 lb by one week of age.
Mom says fluid intake is good and denies any meds. She believes latch
is good, however she has developed some soreness during these extended
nursing sessions.
.
Will be coming in for help on Wednesday. Other than assess latch and
recommend a thyroid test, any ideas? I have considered advising adding
pumping, but would that do anymore than a baby that is nursing for such
a long period? Herbs or reglan could be another suggestion.
TIA,
Judy H. IBCLC
