< On the swaddling arms to the side issue..too many years as a NICU
nurse
has really caused a general aversion to this technique for the most
part.
Even in the most disorganized infant, neonatal therepists who might
swaddle
generally do so with arms up and only swaddle for a brief time to
initiate
a feeding. As soon as the baby "organizes" and can rhythmicly suckle
well,
all therepists I've seen immediately begin to slowly free the infants
arms
to promote normalization . Even when the infants are in their cribs or
isolettes, we always provided time with the baby being in a sidelying
position and a body roll to cuddle around to prevent abnormal
constriction
of shoulder muscles...
IMHO, if an infant or child needs to be swaddled with arms to the sides
because they cannot routinely organize and normalize without
restriction, I
really hope someone in developemental peds is also evaluating. Just a
thought.>
Dear Lisa,
You are quite right about the way neonatal therapists working with
premies handle them, however, wrapping older babies with their hands up
is very difficult...they keep getting them out.
Now, that's not a problem unless you have a baby who is persistently
crying or is waking up too often at night. If parents who are exhausted
because their baby is waking up every 1-2 hours during the night or
whose babies are persistently crying...all to often the mother's stress
level rises, her confidence falls and her milk supply is reduced because
of fatigue and anxiety.
