I really want to thank Barbara for stating the importance of membership.
This year you may have seen me post messages about ILCA and WBW.
I am currently the WBW coordinator, I also serve on the membership committee
and the conference committee. Why - do I have loads of extra time? Not at
all - I work full time, until very recently I was going to school part time
(and may start again) and have other committments as well. Do I have loads
of extra money? Are you kidding - I have two children, one just graduated
college and the other one is a sophomore in a very expensive college.
I joined because it is important for me to be professional in my field, I
joined before I made any money as an LC. I kept offering my services to ILCA
and as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. They got in touch with
me and here I am. I am not part of an "ILCA clique" I don't even know most
of the board. I'm just an IBCLC who feels that my professional organization
is important. It needs to be stronger, but that will only happen when more
people join and say - yes I'm willing to help out.
By the way the dues (as high as it seems) is not high compared to other dues.
I am also a member or APHA (American Public Health Association) even though
I am not employed in the field. The dues for APHA is about a third more than
the ILCA dues (and to be honest I think I receive less value for my money).
