Hi,
May I begin by making a public apology if any offense was taken by my last
post regarding Code Violators at the conference. I am new to this field and
am just trying to learn all aspects of it...from latch-on to the politics.
Every session at the conference was outstanding! As a newbie, I especially
learned the most from Marsha Walker and Barbara Wilson-Clay presenting
"Blueprint for Clinical Skills Acquisition" and Dianne Weissinger and Barbara
Wilson-Clay presenting "A Good Latch". Although Barbara told us "don't worry
about taking notes" it was hard to restrain from not writing down every word
she said yet enjoyable to sit back, relax, and soak it in. She also had some
excellent slides, from her excellent new book I presume. Some of Marsha's
best advice was to keep positioning and latch-on simple and if it works,
though may appear wrong to the LC, don't try to fix it. It made me think of
my own experience nursing my toddler and nursing while pregnant. (Wouldn't it
be easier if breastfeeding started with the toddler age first then the
newborn last...that is toddlers know exactly what to do even if the mother
doesn't whereas newborns or the new-mothers don't always know.) The
discussion on the less common problems of tracheomalacia and laryngomalacia
was excellent too. And if you have never seen Dianne teaching latch-on in
person with all her "props", it's something you need to do! Standing in her
socks on a chair latching onto the fake breast, sandwich, and water balloon
were excellent and fun teaching methods. They all made our job seem so easy
and with such senses of humor, friendliness, and just wonderful
personalities. Their clients must be honored to get counseling from them.
It was an amazing conference from day one. To be sitting next to or across
from the finest in the LC field, to listen to their expertise during their
presentations (especially Audrey Naylor, Thomas Hale, and Peter Hartmann),
and to get an autograph and photo with them was an awesome experience and one
I'll never forget and can only hope to duplicate in the future. It's very
hard to resist ordering every single conference tape from every single
presentation, ones I attended as well as ones I missed. Thank you all.
