Hi Rosellina,

Think the dose you name may be off a bit, as 50mg\day is not enough
fenugreek to help flavour a batch of curry.

This might be the study, which uses a dose of 50 grams twice a day:

Sharma RD, Raghuram TC, Rao NS. Effect of fenugreek seeds on blood glucose
and serum lipids in type I diabetes. Eur J Clin Nutr 1990 Apr;44(4):301-6.

This was a random controlled study of short duration (10 days). Type one
diabetic patients with elevated sugar and lipid profiles were studied.
Treatment group given 50 grams twice a day of defatted fenugreek seed
incorporated into their lunch and dinner. Study found significantly reduced
fasting blood sugars, improved glucose tolerance and significantly reduced
24 hr urine glucose. "Serum total cholesterol, LDL and VLDL cholesterol and
triglycerides were also significantly reduced. The HDL cholesterol fraction,
however, remained unchanged."

bf note:
Would be chary to conclude from this study that fenugreek would have a
negative effect on bf mother's cholesterol; many different constituents of
fenugreek act to improve lipid profiles along the same lines as other plant
foods are thought to do.

Nor would I be overly concerned about the blood sugar thing. First, a mom
would have to eat 50 grams at a time ( galactogogue dose 3-6 g/day total,
divided), and second, one of the constituents of fenugreek that acts to
lower blood sugar (4-hydroxyisoleucine) only kicks in at high blood sugar
levels.

Sincerely,
Sheila Humphrey
