Kathleen,
You asked if anyone else had trouble with the Baby Whisperer, and I
have a resounding YES on my end. Of course, this is not the only book.
Please add Babywise by Ezzo, Solve Your Child's Sleeping Problems by Ferber
(both classics---UGH!) Babywise was even on the Parenting reading list at
Barne's & Noble! Also, What to Expect in the First Year. More than once if
I have seen any of these books on the coffee table, I have suggested it's
best use as kindling in their fireplace (Please don't ask me why, but there
are a lot of fireplaces in Florida homes.)
The best way to combat this issue, is to ask a mother-- What does she
REALLY want? Even though I have dealt with mothers who want the scheduling,
I have more often dealt with a mom who is frustrated because she KNOWS that
she is NOT meeting her baby's needs. Sometimes it pays to leave it simple--
"Whose needs come first? Yours or your baby's? Someone who consciously
cares about her baby will know the answer. After that, everything typically
falls into place. Sometimes what dad wants gets in the way. I have a simple
question for that one too-- Who is the grown up here? Dad or the baby? In
each case, the mother personally answers the question, and then most deal
with it in her own way. To me it just seems obvious what the answers should
be...
