The subject of visitors really hits home with me. Moms (and their
families/friends) forget that in the short time they are in the hospital
and/or in the first days after birth they have 2 primary tasks: 1-to
begin their physical recovery from pregnancy and birth and 2-to learn to
care for themselves and baby. However, visitors and showing off baby (as
great an ego trip as that is) seem to come first and these primary tasks
get pushed to the back burner! Then when we tell mom that she needs to
feed baby as frequently as baby in interested/can be coaxed to, she
complains about being tired. The baby's needs get blamed for her
fatigue, not the visitors!
I wrote up a one-page handout briefly discussing the history of visitor
"rules" and the pros/cons of current protocols. I'd be gad to e-mail it
to anyone interested. Please request at my work e-mail (it's on that
computer)
