When I talk to new moms about diet I tell them if they avoided
everything that someone somewhere suggests a nursing mom can't eat,
she'd starve! Think of what women eat in other cultures: spicy curry in
SE Asia, lots of garlic in Italy, refried beans in Mexico, etc. Their
babies nurse just fine. Having said that, I then mention that if there
is a strong family history of severe food reaction (e.g., the least
amount can make them stop breathing)-to something like peanuts or
shellfish that they might use those foods cautiously until they know
baby is OK with it. While we don't have solid evidence, some research
hints that they could be a problem in those cases.

Winnie
