Nancy, cow's milk protein can cause blood in a breastfed infant's stool. So
can beef, which is the same cow protein.
In cases as you describe, I recommend to the mother a thorough milk produce
elimination, including reading labels on processed foods. I also recommend
an elimination of beef products.
I work with the mother on dietary changes, going with her throughout her
day guiding her in selecting substitutions that are acceptable (even
exciting) to her tastes. Having had to do the same, I am most sympathetic
to their challenge. I often get calls a month or so out with the mother's
saying that it is no longer hard to enjoy a varied diet with no dairy/beef
foods.
I see 2-3 cases a year of blood in stools and the above recommendations
have always resolved the problem.
