Just thought this patent was interesting because it discusses the use of
human lactoferrin (a transferrin) and human lysozyme to prevent dental
diseases.

There is also a protein toothpaste made by Immunotec that states that
"lactoferrin is considered to be an important part of host defense systems
against invading microorganisms becuase of its wide anti-microbial
properties....Lactoferrin is important in oral hygiene because it can prevent
the adhesion and growth of bacteria on your gums. It also acts as na
anti-inflammatory agent. Research suggests that toothpastes and other oral
hygiene products be fortified with proteins such as lactoferrin for superior
oral health." You can order the toothpaste. So I guess we should discourage
nighttime nursing of toddlers and buy some toothpaste instead......yeah only
kidding...here's to nighttime nursing---I call it preventative dentistry at
its finest! Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
