Hi All,

I work in a hospital that has a 12 bed Level 2 nursery. I have noticed
a fair number of moms with infants in our SCN or a Level 3 nursery
having supply issues at about the 3-4 week period, even though they say
they are pumping with a good quality pump, q3h and drinking adequately.
This has prompted me to consider encouraging our moms expressing for a
premie or sick infant to use a pumping log. (Actually what really got
me thinking about it was my own experience of logging my back pain level
4 times a day as part of bio-feedback therapy.)

What I have done was taken an early feeding log (listing normal #'s of
feedings, voids and stools seen during the first week of nursing) and
substituted pumpings, glasses of fluid and relaxation techniques or
things that remind them of their baby.

Using a grid of 24 hrs they can circle the hour that they pump. I have
used the letter W for fluid and have 8 W's along a line. Also use the
letter R for the relaxation or baby reminders. As for goals I have
listed 8-10 pumping sessions, atleast 8 glasses of fluid and 8-10
relaxation or baby reminders.

Sounds confusing, but really is easy to follow. Anyone using anything
like this or have any input? I really hate to get too "technical", but
sometimes I think they may be forgetting some of these basics and that
could be the cause of their supply issues.

TIA, Judy IBCLC Upstate NY
