Hello! My name is Debbie Colbert and I have been lurking on lacnet for a number of years; your information has proven very valuable in my practice. I am the IBCLC at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, where fall has come upon us. Our hospital is a very high percentage of medicaid recipients and we do about 400 deliveries per year; our numbers are growing. Currently we have a 65% breastfeeding rate on discharge followed by about 50% continuing to breastfeed through 6 months. I provide a full service lactation clinic and pump station; we also have a back to work program. Our area is very fortunate to have physicians that are supportive of our lactation resources.
Recently I have begun to research how other IBCLC's perform the following for their hospitals:
1)Third party billing
2) Billing for prenatal or breastfeeding classes
3) Third party billing for pump station equipment
4) Sliding scale fee-for-service
5) Initiation of grant writing to offset items 1-4.
Please email me privately if you have any thoughts, ideas, etc. I have reviewed information that was available in the archives.
Yours in lactation,
Debbie Colbert, RNC., IBCLC
