I had a really puzzling question today. I'm away from home without my
resources, so I'm hoping some of you may be able to help.

Here is the situation:
A baby was born to a hep c positive mother. They dont' know the status of the
baby. Baby is being taken in by a mother who is already nursing her
biological infant. The "adoptive" mother and her bio. baby are not hep c
carriers. Would it be safe for the mother to nurse the baby without knowing
if baby is a carrier? Could it be any danger to the mom or the baby?
I know it's safe for a hep c mom to nurse baby. And, I know it's not
transferred through saliva. So, the only danger would be if Nursing mom and
nursing baby (babies) both had an open woulnd at the same time (mom on
breast/baby on mouth) Right?
IF this woman cannot breastfeed safely, she will pump for the baby.
Please email your answers as well as posting. As I said, I'm away from home
and may not have much time to keep up with Lactnet. She needs an answer
quickly. The Hosp LC she called told her she didn't know and hung up!
Thanks!
