MedWatch: The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program
The FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) notified
healthcare professionals about a growing body of information pertaining to
Enterobacter sakazakii infections in neonates fed milk-based powdered infant
formulas. In light of epidemiological findings, and the fact that powdered
infant formulas are not commercially sterile products, FDA recommends that
powdered infant formulas not be used in neonatal intensive care settings
unless there is no alternative available.
