I just experienced the formula confusion first-hand. I just received a
call from a mom whose baby is not latching on. When I asked if she was
giving formula, she initially said "no," then she said she was giving her
baby "the breastmilk based formula."

Today, prior to this call, I thought I would look at one of the
new "breastfeeding bags" for new moms firsthand. The powdered can
states "A blend of DHA & RHA--Nutrients found in breastmilk." Each bag
comes with four 3-oz bottles and a powdered can that makes 27 ounces. If I
were sleepy and my baby was crying, I'd probably just whip up a bottle of
this stuff :o) After all, it's got the same nutrients as breastmilk. Does
anyone happen to have an older bottle of Enfamil? Does it say "milk based"
or is this a new term?

Also included in the bag were the following:

One-page adverstisement for Lipil, stressing the importance of DAH and ARA
in building a baby's brain and eyes

A tri-fold order form for ready-to-feed formula bottles

A two-page advertisment for Lipil. One quote states: "Experts agree on the
many benefits of breast milk, but if you choose infant formula, make the
right choice--Choose Enfamil LIPIL

A pack of coupons enclosed in a LIPIL envelope

A magazine called "loving your baby the first year"

The magazine has an article on nutrition. One of the recommendations is
to "perhaps start off with breastfeeding--if it goes well, stick with it,
or if not, then switch to formula." It also states that "Bottlefeeding
mothers bond just as closely with their baby as nursing mothers."

There's a nice full-page advertisement which states
Vitamin D . . . Does Your Breastfed Baby Get Enough?

The magazine has seven 1-2 page advertisements for LIPIL

There's a generous $5 rebate for a breastpump, a breastfeeding booklet, a
handout on how to use the bag, 2 ice packs, a bottle nipple, and a
breastfeeding record.

Finally, a musical CD.

Why would anyone want to breastfeed?
