Moms who are still pumping for their growing premie by the baby's d/c are,
committed to providing the best for their precious newcomer. Throughout
their experience in NICU they have been guided in learning to care for their
baby according to their infant's behavior cues. By discharge, the goal is
that they can do this independently. Breast feeding a premie is merely an
extension of this art of observing the baby for signs of hunger, satiety,
alertness, responsiveness, activity level, comfort level & most importantly,
fatigue. Specific D/C feeding instructions are one thing but mom needs to
be able to strike a balance between providing nutrition & challenging her
baby just a little at a time (if infant seems receptive). No one can tell
you how or when to do this unless they are witnesses to the feedings on a
daily basis. Parents need some feeding guidelines, but performance at the
breast is experienced & nurtured differently by each dyad. Effective
breastfeeding can also defined differently from one situation to the next.
The ability to nuture is inherent in all humans, Parents of NICU grads need
to be given some credit for possessing this quality. Outside help & support
is usually a phone call away if they need it. Jeanne RN, IBCLC in
Allentown, Pa. (not exactly on the cutting edge yet, but really working hard)
