Barb has asked a question regarding any cost effectiveness documentation of
lactation services. Miriam Labbok has a chapter in the book Breastfeeding
Annual International 2001 by Dia Michels (editor) that talks about the cost
benefit of breastfeeding in the US. I think this is what you are looking for.
She has also included an appendix detailing the mathemetical models used in
her calculations. She estimates that for every dollar spent on breastfeeding,
between $1.11 to $1.73 would be saved. This might help you in your
submission. There are other studies that have looked at the outcomes of
having a lactation consultant available at WIC programs and the increased
breastfeeding durations that are seen with the presence of the LC versus the
absence of one. Hope this is helpful.
