In a Malawi program for HIV positive mothers, those who choose not to breastfeed are given one postpartum tablet of carbegoline or dolstinex. A doctor there reports that this drug is very effective in stopping lactation without any side effect on the mother or on the child. No breast engorgement, no dripping milk, no breast abscess.
I do not find these names in Tom Hale's 2002 book, nor in the WHO guide to breastfeeding and maternal medication. Are there any LactNetters, perhaps from the Commonwealth, who would be able to say what exactly this drug is and whether it is elsewhere reported to be without side effects?
