Mary Kay and All,
"Bathing a 24 hour
old baby (immersion) is not advisable due to potential for cord infection ..."
This brings up a question I've grappled with and have received different
answers depending to whom I speak. How serious is the risk of infection of
umbilical cord and for how long after birth is this a factor? Or is it?
What about LeBoyer's bathing of just born babies? How about co-bathing to
coax a non-latcher to the breast?
How about moms' safety in co-bathing? Again for non-latching.
For both mother and baby if submersed in a well cleaned tub, removed, washed
and rinsed well if infant stooling should occur, and both again well dried is
their a real risk of infection for them?
I've had pedi's and midwives give their ok for co-bathing before cord falls
off and before that magical 6 wk PP check, but since other HCP's stand firm
on no baths until PP 6 wks and cord off, I've always been unsure.
Looking forward to a bit of discussion on this and hope it's not in archives
and I'm being remiss-will search if told it is.
