I don't know if this discussion came as a result of my discussion
outline, but it certainly ties into it nicely. I found it very
interesting to hear why women *think* women don't breastfeed.
If you had been told not to breastfeed because you smoked, or if your
husband told you that he wouldn't let you breastfeed, or if your doctor
told you that you needed a rest or a medication or something else, so
you shouldn't breastfeed, wouldn't your decision not to breastfeed be
based on misinformation? lack of support? even, possibly, a desire to do
the best you could for your baby? I think it is sad to hear, "I really
wanted to breastfeed, but I couldn't manage to quit smoking during my
pregnancy."
Fear, worry, lack of self-confidence, discomfort with her body, grief...

Ask the mothers. I think it is really helpful. Yes, they have all heard
it is better, and know why. Why don't they do it? Ask them.
And please share your wisdom on Lactnet.
Jo-Anne
