I also encourage parents to wash all pump parts in hot soapy water with a
bottle brush and rinse well after each use.  I recommend they use a bowl or
dish pan for breastfeeding things.. pump parts, breast shields, syringes etc
and then to drain them in a colander type bowl.  That way everything drains
well, there is no balancing involved! And everything is in ONE place when the
next feed/pump time rolls around, which seems to save some frustration.
Also, for people using a pump, I recommend they keep 2 big coffee mugs by the
pump to set the top-heavy collection bottles in at the end of a pump.  This
often helps to avoid 'crying over spilt milk'!
