Barbara's information on blow-back is one of the reasons why I rent
Ameda Egnell pumps, the totally closed hygeinikit does not allow this to
happen. The milk is totally isolated from the motor by a silicone
diaphragm which expands and contracts as air is pulled out of it and
allowed back in by the motor. I also use a disinfectant cleaner to
remove any bits of dried milk from the outside of the pump in between
clients, and I inspect the inside (the anterior case and tubing is
transparent) to make sure there is no milk inside (in case they used a
cheap kit rather than the one I supplied).
I was once at a client's home when she received a pump delivery from a
drugstore, the pump came filthy with crusted old milk from multiple
users. I almost lost my breakfast just looking at it.
