One thought that comes to mind is how many of us are using the Hollisters
hygieni kits, especially within the hospitals or rentals? Since this is the
only FDA approved set for prevention of contamination, it seems the most
logical one for use with multi patient pump systems. Unfortunatly, the
Medela filters don't appear to meet the same standards since they have not
obtained FDA approval. With the risk to patients/clients documented by
Lawrence et al via contamination, the FDA approved Hollister pump kits "
reassured" our infection control/risk management team that we were taking
every current step to protect patients. Yes, the diaphram can develop a
tear or hole, but since this affects the pump pressure and milk in the
tubing is an obvious sign of barrier damage, patients can alert staff of
problems. I only have had one episode of this in the two years we've been
using the hygieni kits so the diaphrams appear pretty sturdy. And the cost
is equal or less than the other sets out there on the market.
This might also be a suggestion for the client who is determined to use a
preowned pump or pump from another pregnancy despite our advise. At least
if I can get them to use the hygieni kit with it, some measure of
protection might be offered.
Hoping to meet up with fellow lactnetters at Sedona-
Lisa
