Gosh! I don't post much if at all, really, but I have another question for
ya'll!
I suppose I should re intro who I am since I am somewhat of a stranger to
most of you.
I am a lay counselor in the Detroit area. I rent pumps, etc. through my
store, Maternal Expressions, LTD. Even though this is a 'big city', I feel
kinda isolated from any other breastfeeding professionals.
There isn't much new under the sun, so, I can usually figure things out on my
own. These last two weeks have been kinda busy, which usually means more
'counseling' calls.
I have a mom who is renting a classic pump. Baby is 5 weeks old. Started out
with formula first 1 1/2 weeks gradually began adding more expressed breast
milk until the baby was getting all EBM and only one supp. of formula.
The baby has has problems with gas that the mom says has increased since
using more Breastmilk. Symptoms are typical 'colic' type. Pulling legs up,
screaming, generally at night. She cut everything out of her diet. No change.
Oh-stools yellow and seedy and lots of them, gaining weight well.
She feeds ev. 4 hours. The nurse at her peds office says "Just feed formula"
, so , she does and WHA ! LAA! no more crying jags.
Mom told me that her other child had reflux so, they keep the baby upright
after feeds. This got me thinking that *maybe* this baby also has reflux, but
it isn't really detectable because the baby doesn't spit up noticably. Is
this possibly what could be causing gas and/or pain resulting in long
episodes of crying at night? She is feeding ev. 4 hours, should I suggest
that this mom do shorter more frequent feeds? Just thinking out loud and
hoping someone can tell me why changing to formula would be the 'cure' for
colic!
Thanks to all,
Diane
