Catherine, yes, good point....I have especially liked using a 5 fr fdg tube
under a shield for the baby who cannot BF directly due to latch-defying
breast, and who needs to be supplemented for whatever reason, ...seems to me
that this set up is often times preferable to bottle/nipple, finger, and cup
fdg;

* keeps baby "at breast", pretty close anyway

* provides some nipple stimulation/flow of breastmilk, even early PP

* encourages a wider mouth latch/suck than some bottle nipples, fingerfdg,
and cup fdg

* encourages nipple protractility during the fdg

* parents seem comfortable with it as baby controls flow as sucking is
required to extract the supplement through the shield pores

* sometimes seems to be an easier transition to direct BF if you can get the
nipples to eventually cooperate
                   __
* pumping pc (after fdg) helps initiate and maintain supply till shield is
DC'd

I like to have baby in as upright a position as possible to facilitate the
baby's control over flow rate while fdg.
