Thank you for your explanations and opinions re my questions. Yes I have
recommended that the colostrum be saved and given later, as you suggested.
This is an ongoing problem, as very often we have moms on contraindicated
meds (I have no control, other than to provide information to the docs and
encourage them to allow bf) and they are told to toss out the milk. Often
this is done before I have contact with the mom. I walk a fine line, as it
is not taken kindly to contradict the physician and I'd rather not do that.
So I can provide info to the parents, as well, and "suggest" they might want
to save the milk at home.
For example, here are some contraindicated meds encountered almost daily on
the postpartum unit: all narcotic analgesics, mg sulfate, clindamycin,
unasyn (ampicillin + sulbactam).
