My informal protocol is:
If baby transfers milk well with shield by test weights, I no longer
recommend that mom pump unless diaper (particularly stool) count is
below optimum.
If baby does not transfer milk well with shield, I try a smaller shield,
and if that does not work, I abandon the idea of using a shield, except
maybe for pacification and practice latching while mom pumps and feeds
via alternate feeding method.
