Hi Martha and all
this difficulty with disorganised suckling post vacuum extraction has been
concerneing me for some time as well. We see a lot of babies in Melbourne
(Australia) in my practice that have this problem. I am beginning to think
it is not necessarily the mode of delivery - rather the drug fentanyl which
is in the epidurals which usually accompanies the instrumental delivery.
Babies that are born by C/S, vac or forceps who have been exposed to
fentanyl all seem to exhibit problems with suck for anything up to weeks
even with a lot of care and work.I am hoping to do some research on this in
the near future -
I would be most interested to hear what others find? is Fentanyl used
routinely where you work? in what sort of doses in epidurals and have you
noticed any problems? could you email me privately and to the list?
Much appreciated
Jenni James
