There is actually big money in market research. Probably the formula
companies are the ones hiring the market research firm, to get
information that will help them improve their marketing.
I've participated in quite a few focus groups and such. It's kindof
cool to get an envelope of cash for sitting in a room discussing cable
service or grocery store designs for an hour. Unfortunately, one does
not always know in advance who is paying for the study, the recruiter
does not always know, they just have a list of demographic criteria to
try to fill.
