I am in florida.. here, medicaid pays zippo, nothing!! Although I am
learning from some very wise LCs ways to get "around the system" legally.
WIC has pumps but only about 25 or so for the county.. there is also
inconsistency with getting the pumps for the moms.. the "referral" process is
not working well (and that is another debate!!). If it is truly free, Is
there a max amount of "formula" you can get from the companies? I wonder if
we pushed the requests, would that "free" get not so free!!!
I am also interested in understanding why most of us understand the formula
to be free only by heresay! I havent truley been told by anyone that we
never pay for it, it is always "i've been told" or "I thought", or "I didn't
think". We also "know" there is a cost somewhere. I wonder if we paid for
the formula, would the ensure price drop? I still come back to the
discriminatory aspect of providing a food tray (formula) for the patient
(NICU baby) but charging for the food tray (pump) for the patient (NICU
baby).

Unfortunately, this issue has really caused some serious issues amongst staff
and administration. Basically, it is coming down to "....it's over...!" The
grant route is another venture..but, administration and others opposing this
aren;t at the solution stage yet.. they are stuck in the, well, whatever it
is, they are stuck in it.

And this is just one reason why I no longer work in the hospital system. It
is difficult for me to work with complacency, avoiders.. I get annoyed and
frustrated with bureaucracy, naiveté.

And for the LC internship at a hospital. As a private practitioner, I have
given a local hospital an affiliation contract so that LC interns can
practice at their facility. THey are very excited. The contract is written
like a nursing school contract. The IBCLCs will be preceptors much like
nurses on a floor. I would act as clinical instructor to be there when
needed, to do hands on, to guide. The negotions are in place now and the
IBCLCs at that hospital are feeling good about doing it They agree with the
idea of "formal training". Hopefully the contract will be signed and they
will be doing hands on in the hospital soon!
